CONVICTED FELON WHO SHOT JPD OFFICER
PLEADS GUILTY TO POSSESSION OF A FIREARM
Jackson, Miss – Ahmad Williams, 29, of Jackson, pled guilty today in U.S. District Court to an indictment charging him as a felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis announced.
On April 25, 2011, officers with the Jackson Police Department arrested Williams on an outstanding capital murder warrant. As they made the arrest, the defendant produced a .45 caliber pistol and fired two shots at the officers, one of which struck and injured an officer. A review of his criminal history revealed that Williams had been previously convicted of multiple felonies.
“The brazen act of shooting a police officer underscores the importance of aggressively prosecuting those who illegally possess firearms,” said U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis. “We, along with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, are committed to reducing violent crime and keeping guns out of the hands of violent, repeat offenders.”
Williams will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Carlton W. Reeves on March 26, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Jackson Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst.
